    An Ethiopian dissident has appeared in court charged with terror offences after he was arrested at Heathrow Airport. Tadesse Kersmo, 51, is accused of attending a place used for terrorist training, in Eritrea, and eight counts of possessing articles useful for terrorism.

    He was held on his return to the UK on January 4 and appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday wearing a white shirt and dark trousers.

    He spoke to confirm his name, address and date of birth before indicating not-guilty pleas to all nine of the charges. He is alleged to have had copies of four electronic documents on two dates, September 27 last year and January 4, including a sniper training manual published by the US military.

    Another entitled "The Compilation of Security and Intelligence Principles" is believed to have been issued by a jihadist group, according to the charge.

    The other two were named "The Mini-manual of the Urban Guerrilla" and "Put 'em down, Take 'em out! Knife Fighting Techniques from the Prison".Kersmo, who lives in Finsbury Park, north London, was granted asylum in Britain after fleeing his native Ethiopia with his wife in 2009.

    The court heard he works for the anti-Ethiopian government group "Ginbot 7", which is not proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK.Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said the case was not suitable for trial before magistrates and sent the case to the Old Bailey for a jury trial. Kersmo was granted conditional bail subject to a £25,000 security and will next appear at the Old Bailey on July 20
